Student Engagement Research/Project Assistants (Deadline 7 April)

The Student Engagement Team are looking to recruit two of our current students to work with us part-time over the next year as our workload grows. The Student Engagement Team primarily supports staff across the University to improve the quality of what they do by working in partnership with students. We also coordinate some of the University’s student surveys and pilot innovative ways of getting students involved across departments, like being on interview panels for new staff.

These new Research & Projects Assistant posts (we have two available) will provide the Student Engagement Team (currently 3 people, soon to be 4 + these 2 roles) with administrative support and will be directly involved in researching the views and practice of our staff and students. The roles will have an interesting mix of desk based analysis and people-facing interaction in them and we can play to the strengths of the successful candidates.

As a team made up of Lincoln graduates, we know the pressures of student life and can be flexible around teaching and other commitments. The hours equate to one day per week in term time (which can be worked across several days in small chunks if needed) plus we have extra hours we can use during busier parts of the year.

If you would like to apply, please send your CV and a covering letter – outlining how you meet the criteria in the person specification and what you could bring to the team – to dderricott@lincoln.ac.uk by 9:00am on Monday 7th April 2014.

If you have any questions about the role, you can email Dan Derricott, Student Engagement Officer: dderricott@lincoln.ac.uk

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Scheme: Summer Bursary

The UROS scheme provides bursaries for University of Lincoln undergraduates to work as research assistants during the summer.

Funding

One potential project for this summer is described below; please contact Mark Smith to discuss the opportunity further. (Third year students are not eligible for the scheme, unfortunately.)

“The School of Sport and Exercise Science and School of Computer Sciences are currently planning to undertake a research study to examine the role physical activity plays on our microvascular geometry within the retina. We would be looking for a research assistant to run a six-week exercise programme that would require the management of 10 participants through 18 30-minute treadmill sessions. There will also be a requirement to collect the observations and present the findings back to the research team in order for these to be integrated within the research study. Following formal training provided by the research team, you will be expected to undertake this independently and manage each exercise training session safely and effectively. You must be willing to show flexibility and be highly motivated, taking on the responsibility to organising and booking in exercise sessions with each participant. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved within a novel research study across Colleges, with the chance of gaining first-hand experience of undertaking an exercise intervention strategy with sedentary individuals.”

If you require further information or assistance in developing a UROS application please contact Dr Mark F Smith (mfsmith@lincoln.ac.uk).
