We are very pleased to announce that Liam Sanders – performance analyst & biomechanist for the England cricket team – will be giving a presentation about his work in the Coaching Suite at 6pm on Tuesday 22nd October.
The talk is open to all, but could you please email Sandy Willmott at swillmott@lincoln.ac.uk if you would like to attend.
Liam gave a fascinating presentation that dealt with both his academic progress from a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science to a PhD in the biomechanics of spin bowling, and his work with England Cricket. The latter integrates performance analysis with both experimental and theoretical biomechanics, in a model that other sports are now apparently very interested in. Liam described the role that he and his colleagues play in selection, and highlighted the benefits of working with coaches who are open to input of this kind.
In general advice to the students present, Liam emphasised the importance of finding a sport niche that you are truly interested in and then really pursuing it. Don’t be afraid to ask (badger?) lecturers about whether they ever need help with research or applied work. He has ended up with his “dream job” and, through the application of biomechanics, feels he can make an impact. Tours to warm climates are a bonus!
