Lincolnshire Sport Student Volunteering Programme

Lincolnshire Sport are offering a number of opportunities for students to become involved with sports volunteering in the county. Outlines of some of these are given below, but for more information please contact Navaz Sutton (navaz.sutton@lincolnshiresport.com ; 01522 730325) or see the Lincolnshire Sport website.

Lincolnshire Show (June 2017)
Help set up and run the Lincolnshire Sport arena, which houses a number of partners and sporting providers over the two-day show. Volunteers may also be involved with marketing, surveying participants, or assisting with research that could be aligned with their studies.

School Games (July 9th 2017)
The focus of the Lincolnshire School Games is to engage more young people in high quality, meaningful school competition. They provide a year-round competition calendar, culminating in county festivals. Volunteers are vital to the success of the event and roles include event support, young volunteer mentoring, marshalling, school liaison, marketing and running activities.

County Ambassador Programme
CAP is a volunteering and leadership programme for Year 7 to Year 13 students. Part of this involves workshops for Year 9 and 10 students, and volunteers can become involve in shaping and delivering these events (alongside Lincolnshire Sport staff).

Sports Club Volunteering
Lincolnshire Sport collate information on opportunities where clubs are looking for support from volunteers. Roles could include coaching, marketing, officiating and scoring.

IMPACT
This project is designed to get more disabled people volunteering in sport, and local clubs and organisations can receive free training to help create a welcoming environment for disabled sports volunteers. Students are able to get involved with this initiative.

Workplace Challenge
Lincolnshire Sport organise the regional implementation of this national programme. Businesses and organisations compete through activities designed to promote health and active workplaces, and volunteers are needed to help ensure the competitions run smoothly.

Lincolnshire Sport Student Volunteer Alumni
Lincolnshire Sport will assess the capability, attitude and potential of students undertaking volunteer roles and this process can lead to students being invited to participate in the Student Volunteer Network. This exclusive group will have exclusive access to additional opportunities and higher-level roles. Some of these opportunities may include paid work with Lincolnshire Sport or their partners, and will feature the chance to gain interview and application experience.

Sport Science Opportunities, Grimsby Town FC Academy

An opportunity has arisen for some extended voluntary work with Grimsby Town FC Academy. Activities / duties would include:

  • Collecting RPE data each session from each team / group and collating in a spreadsheet
  • Collecting anthropometric data for all players in the academy with a focus on examining PHV in u11 – 16
  • Preparing learning materials for parents (e.g. 5 points on a successful bodyweight squat)

There is some flexibility in the roles, however, and  other activities / duties could include:

  • Leading and / or facilitating warm ups to groups (e.g. u9/10/11 warm up together)
  • Leading and / or facilitating physical preparation sessions to smaller groups with a specific focus (e.g. co-ordination, unilateral balance etc.)

Different age groups train at different times, but all are within the window of 5-8pm on Mondays and Fridays.

The Academy are looking to get students involved ASAP. Applications from postgraduates are particularly welcome, but undergraduates who are good communicators with children are also encouraged to apply.

The main things for students to consider if they would like to be involved is:

  • Can they commit for the majority of the season and not just turn up intermittently or for a brief period (e.g. be consistent for two weeks and then no available for the next three)
  • Can they transport themselves to Oasis Academy Wintringham (Weelsby Ave, Grimsby DN32 0AZ) in a timely manner

We have been told that there is definitely an opportunity for these roles to develop into paid work at GTFC. They are also very open to students suggesting how they could potentially collect data for dissertation purposes.

If you would like to know more about the roles, or would like to contact the club to discuss options further, please contact Sandy Willmott initially at swillmott@lincoln.ac.uk

Note: we are preparing a list of other volunteering options in the local area, for promotion during Welcome Week later this month. Please keep an eye out for new posts here, on Blackboard and on social media.
